Dr. Magnus A. Azuine

Dr. Azuine is currently a Research Scientist at both The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Washington DC and the Departments of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, The George Washington University, Washington DC. He is also a Visiting Scientist, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Howard University, Washington, DC. He holds a Ph.D. (Biochemistry) from the University of Bombay, India after working at the Cancer Research Institute, Tata Memorial Center, Bombay. He completed a postdoctoral training at the Institute for Pharmacy, Free University, Berlin, Germany.  He served extensively as a Research Scientist, first at the National Institute for Medical Research, Lagos, Nigeria and later the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Abuja, Nigeria. He also worked as Adjunct Professor of Biology, Bowie State University, and Instructor, the Department of Applied and Basic Sciences, and the Discover Sciences Program, Montgomery College, both in Maryland, USA. He has published extensively in international scientific journals and made contributions to many books.  In Biomedical Sciences, he has introduced new concepts including “Adjuvant Chemoprevention of Cancer” in J. Ethnopharmacology 44: 211 (1994) and “Hypothesis – Transplacental Chemoprevention of Cancer in J. Transfigural Mathematics 4: 59 (1998). He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship Award (Germany), and the American Institute for Cancer Research (USA).  He is the author of the book “Cancer and Ethnobotany of Nigeria” (1998) Shaker Verlag, Germany (www.shaker.de). Dr. Azuine has been involved in community and philanthropic organization since the ‘80s, and while doing a National Youth Service started the Cancer Enlightenment Society of Nigeria (1992). He is a member of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and wrote extensively as a Health Columnist in Abuja Mirror, a weekly newspaper where he teaches the fundamentals of various health issues to the general public.

Dr. Chandra Gottipati

Research Scientist, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Washington DC, and The Department of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, The George Washington University, Washington DC, USA, graduated from JJM Medical College, India in 1998.After that he joined as a Medical Officer in various inner-city Hospitals in India treating diverse patient population. He has a strong interest in community activities. Chandra actively participated in the World Health Organization (WHO) project “Intensified pulse polio immunization” which targeted to eliminate polio. He was also active in WHO AIDS education camps and several Health awareness camps in India. “I do believe that health is the right of everyone and shouldn’t be a luxury to anyone”

Dr. Nkechi M. Enwerem

Dr. Nkechi Enwerem, obtained a B.Sc. (Pharmacology) from the University of Bath, England (1983), M.Sc.(Medicinal Chemistry) from Loughborough University of Technology, Loughborough, England (1986) and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (2002) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She is presently doing her post doctoral training at the College of Pharmacy, Howard University, USA [2002 -]. She joined the staff of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Nigeria [NIPRD] in 1990 as a Research fellow and became a Senior Research Fellow in 1998. She was a staff of NIPRD till 2002 before joining Howard University. At NIPRD, she held different positions. This include; Head of department Medicinal Plant and Research and Traditional Medicine [1992 -1994]; Project Manager, UNIDO/UNDP project on Medicinal and Aromatic plants (1995-1999]. Dr. Enwerem is also member of some professional bodies. She was the vice president of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy [1997-2001]. Her current research interests include isolation, characterization of chemical compounds and standardization of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Austin C. Ekwem

Austin C. Ekwem is a Supervisory Social Worker with the Child and Family Services, Government of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC and an international expert Intake and Investigative Administration. Austin graduated from the University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC with a BS in Business Administration specializing in Finance and an MBA in Accounting. He also holds a MSW degree from the Howard University, Washington DC. He is a member of several professional organizations and holds a LICSW license in social works.

Remi K. Obiajunwa

Remi K. Obiajunwa is a senior software engineer currently engaged in creating custom business solutions for the financial industry in the United States and Canada. His IT career began in Toronto, Canada in the early 90's where he worked as a consultant for an IBM consulting firm. Since then, he has held consulting positions in New Jersey and Maryland, and currently works with a team engaged in creating custom loan origination and servicing software.
Remi has also worked as software and network engineering trainer and instructor for small and large corporations. He has earned certificates, degrees and diplomas in Nigeria, Canada and the United States. Some of his numerous awards and certifications include the premier certications by Microsoft Corporation as Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, Microsoft Certified Database Administrator and Microsoft Certified Trainer.

Dr. Govind J. Kapadia

Govind J. Kapadia is a Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Howard University, Washington, DC. He holds a B.Sc.(Hons.) Chemistry, B.Sc.(Tech. Pharm.), M.Sc. (Tech. Pharm. Sci.) and Ph.D. (Pharmaceutical Sciences) from the University of Wisconsin in 1959. After one year of Post-doctoral research at the Ohio State University, he joined the faculty of the then College of Pharmacy, Howard University and simultaneously assumed the Chairmanship of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products. He established a very active research program. As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Kapadia directed and funded research activities in which over thirty post-doctoral research associates including international exchange scholars participated. In addition, several graduate students have earned MS. and Ph.D. degrees under his supervision. Since joining Howard University, he has been recipient of over US$1.7 million in grants and contracts. He has received numerous patents. Dr. Kapadia has also been recipient of Awards for sustained academic accomplishments and outstanding community services.

Enyinna S. Nwauche

Enyinna.S Nwauche, currently the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission is an Associate Professor of Law at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu Port Harcourt Rivers State, Nigeria. He has at various times been Dean Faculty of Law, Rivers State University of Science and Technology and Director of Operations of the Centre for Advanced Social Sciences (CASS) Port Harcourt Nigeria. He has been a DAAD fellow, and Fellow of the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property Tax Law and Competition Law, Munich, Germany. He has researched and published extensively in the area of intellectual property law, human rights law, and company law.

Dr. Emmanuel O. Akala

Dr. Emmanuel O. Akala is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy and a licensed Pharmacist in USA. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manchester, England in 1986 in Pharmaceutics under the direction of Professor John Collett (Polymeric Drug Delivery Systems). He was a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria (1987-94). He worked with Professor R. Gronning as a DAAD Fellow at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, University of Muenster, Germany in 1993 and also as a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health and a Research Associate in the Departments of Pharmaceutics /Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Bioengineering, University of Utah from 1994-1997 in the laboratory of Professor Jindrich Kopecek.. He is at the moment an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, Howard University, USA. Dr.  Akala has authored  more than 40 peer reviewed manuscripts (journals & proceedings), several conference abstracts, and 1 patent (WO9801421). He is a co-editor of 1 published book and 1 book chapter. He is an instructor in Physical Pharmacy and Laboratory in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the coordinator/instructor in Biopharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics, Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmaceutical Mathematics courses offered to the professional pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy) students at Howard University. He is involved in the teaching of Advanced Physical Pharmacy; Drug Delivery Systems; Drug Stability and Packaging; and Grant Proposal Writing at the MS/Ph.D level at Howard University. Dr. Akala’s current research activities include: (1) colloidal drug delivery systems microspheres and nanospheres): a) development of naltrexone-loaded polymeric controlled delivery systems, which is supported by NIH Grant # 1 R21 AA13407-01 (2002-2005) and Dr Akala is the principal investigator; b) Design of nano-sized targetable and biorecognizable dendritic biomaterials for the delivery of bioactive agents (supported by W. M. Keck Foundation through Howard University Keck Center for the Design of Nanoscale Materials for Molecular Recognition) 2002 – 2004. It is a center grant and Dr. Akala is one of the principal investigators. (2) Development of organic redox-initiated polymerization process for the fabrication of hydrogels for the delivery of thermolabile compounds (peptides and proteins); (3) The Synthesis of Analogs of NSC D698576 and NSC D698577 and Development of Targetable Delivery Systems for Ovarian Cancer. It is supported by Lilly Grant: (Co-Principal Investigator). Recently, Dr. Akala served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, Center for Scientific Review Special Emphasis Panel (ZRG1 SSS-O 10 B, Small Business, Cardiovascular and Pharmacology) March and June, 2003. Dr. Akala is also a reviewer to some scientific journals: International Journal of Pharmaceutics, Biomaterials, AAPS Pharm. Sci. (an electronic journal), and Journal of Biomedical Material Research Journal of Biomedical Material Research.

Dr. Daniel MN. Okenu

Dr. Daniel MN Okenu is an Infectious Disease Expert at the Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, USA, working in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Malaria and Tuberculosis. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and did his post-doctoral studies at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, England. He was formerly a visiting Scientist at the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, India. Dr. Okenu is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London, England, and a Scientific Advisor to the Third World Academy of Sciences, Trieste, Italy.

Dr. B. Emmanuel Akinshola

Dr. B. Emmanuel Akinshola is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Howard University, College of Medicine, Washington, DC, USA.  He is a mentor to number of  graduate and professional students in the field of Neuropharmacology. In addition, he is engage in extensive biomedical research which includes the unraveling of the molecular  mechanisms of alcohol and marijuana addictive actions in the Brain and Central Nervous System. Dr. Akinshola received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Alabama State University, and a  Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology from Howard University. He did 3 years of postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University and 6 years of research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health before joining the Faculty of Howard University. 

Segun G. Ademowo

Dr. Olusegun George Ademowo is currently Senior Research Fellow at  the Postgraduate Institute for Medical Research and Training, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He also holds a joint appointment with the Department of Pharmacology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he teaches pharmacology to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is also the Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the University of Ibadan. He holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from the University  of Ibadan, Nigeria and has centered his research in the field of malaria. Dr. Ademowo is a recipient of both the Alexander von Humboldt and Volkswagen Foundation Research Fellowship (Germany). He is a member of various learned societies including the Biochemical Society of England, Institute of Biochemical Sciences, London, New York Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the West African Society for Pharmacology. He is cited in the marquis WHO IS WHO in Science and Engineering, 2003.
